Boris Sagal’s film “The Omega Man” was the second attempt to produce Richard Matheson’s classic recent (the third is with Will Smith) into a film. Matheson wrote a veil version that starred Vincent Label (entitled “The Last Man on Earth”) that captured some of the qualities of his unique but suffered from being shot in post-War Italy on a rude budget (Matheson substituted his name in the credits with a pseudonym) . It’s morose, indecent budget cinematography added to the film but it fails to live up to Matheson’s unusual current.”The Omega Man” likewise fails to live up to Matheson’s current but is unexcited an savory if dated science fiction film. Charlton Heston and the supporting cast do a dazzling job with the material that they are given even if the screenplay guts some of the best elements of the original in favor of more topical material from the time. The opening sequence where Heston drives down a deserted street in Los Angeles and then screens “Woodstock” in an empty theater continues to be eerie and quite effective even 35 years later.

In Matheson’s new recent the result of viral warfare (in the film this is due to chemical warfare. Joyce Carrington takes credit for coming up with this view) changes humans into vampire-like (ghouls in this film with a sensitivity to sunlight) creatures. Neville appears to be the last human. In the film the creatures are led by a archaic news anchor (played by Anthony Zerbe) who taunts Neville hunting him unbiased as he hunts them, Neville meets other humans after a long period of isolation awakening his sense of humanity.

Any science fiction film is truly about the decade it was made in. The film ends up being about the last vestiages of the 60’s and 70’s (and cults like the Manson Family which is really what the “Family” of ghouls record) and the conflict between the location quo and youth culture. Neville represents technology, reason and the past while the “Family” represents a rejection of the very things that made them into monsters and changed the world.

Although it’s a bit heavy handed and departs signficantly from Matheson’s fresh, “The Omega Man” carries over some of Matheson’s themes and the sense of loss, lonliness and how we can lose our possess sense of humanity when surrounded by “monsters”. There are some very effective scenes in the film and Heston does an superb job of portraying Neville’s fragile fill on sanity. Although not as apt as “Planet of the Apes” or even “Soylent Green”, “The Omega Man” is a dated but palatable science fiction film that has become a bit campy with the passage of time.

The DVD features a very excellent transfer of the film. An “introduction” (it’s more of a brief featurette on the film) by screenwriter Joyce H. Corrington, actors Paul Koslo and Eric Laneuville who appear in the film Unfortunately Heston wasn’t interviewed for this reissue of the film. We do, however, salvage a vintage featurette where Heston talks about the film and his character with an anthropologist that influenced his occupy on Neville. We also glean a text extra “Charlton Heston-Science Fiction Anecdote”. Although this isn’t the best film of the four science fiction films Heston made during the 70’s (the ending of this film with its heavy handed Christ-like death of a major character is a bit powerful), it’s unruffled delectable due to the action sequences and the performances of the ancient cast.

With a nod to some of the previous reviewers, yes this movie is quite dated. Especially if you are watching this for the very first time. It’s a film that was released in 1971 and is about events 4 years into the future. So of course it’s dated. But I had the pleasure of seeing this in the theater when it was first released and to this day, no film EVER grabbed my attention as mercurial as “The Omega Man.” The opening scene, done pre-opening credits, is and probably will always be my all-time well-liked scene, if only for the surprise factor.

The position is the “end-of-civillzation-and-beyond” kind. Here, a border war between Russia and China turns into germ warfare, releasing a scandalous bug into the atmosphere. Most people die almost instantaniously. However, a little percentage live on for a short while but are turned into an almost albino area where any type of deny light causes them emmense harm. Heston plays Robert Neville, a government researcher who discovered a cure for the virus only to have his helicopter rupture on the method to articulate the vaccine. As a last resort he injects himself with what’s left of the vaccine and thus becomes the only human on the planet immune.

Now to account for some of the mis-information stated in other reviews. The group of albino survivors are not vampires/nombies/whatever. As the virus takes maintain of them they go insane. Led by Mathias (Anthony Zerbe) they have decided the disease is God’s punishment for man’s overuse of techology and have decided it is their mission to burn all forms of knowledge. By night we peep book burnings as they sack the deserted Los Angeles. To them Neville is like Satan because he refuses to denounce the ancient ways. This leads to basically two stubborn men twisted on the destruction of the other. By day Neville hunts down “the Family and by night the family lays siege to his fortress-like home.

Yes, there are some scenes that really push the envelope of believability. But then again, this is science fiction, and any advantageous sci-fi myth will do that. There are also many scenes that retain you on the edge of your seat. One in particular, after being captured, Neville is taken to Dodger Stadium where the Family plans to burn him along with a tremendous pile of books. To the family, it’s their crowning moment. But at the last exiguous both the family and Neville catch a surprise when the stadium lights are suddenly turned on, sending the family to the ground in hurt. I can’t go further into the scene without spoiling it so lets unbiased say the rush is one of the many surprises that maintain popping up.

To sum up, I would recommend this film to any sci-fi fan. Again, it is dated but the situation is immense and of course Heston and Zerbe are absolutely big as adversaries. Don’t miss it.

For true Tiger fans this is the ultimate collection, especially since Tiger Woods has been very private about his personal life. In this set he talks about his family and his thoughts and feelings during his childhood and teen years and also shows the fun side of his personality which we rarely see on the golf course. The interviews are a very important part of this collection and the bonus features are the icing on the cake, but if you are mostly interested in actual golf footage, then buy the DVDs of his major wins, but if you want to see the personal side of Tiger this is the Collection to have.

Really disappointed in this set. Far too much fluff and not enough substance here. Was looking forward to the clinic, but there was nothing there of exception. You can find most of this footage on the Channel. My advice? If you must see this: Rent don’t buy. Not worth $50, and probably not worth half as much used.

I haven’t yet read the Dave Barry novel from which this movie was adapted, yet I enjoyed it very much. Tim Allen plays Eliot Arnold, a former pulitzer prize winning journalist that wrote satirical columns, much like Barry, but is finally fired for overreacting to an order from his editor. He finds himself divorced and stuck in an advertising job that he loathes. On top of that, he can’t get the respect of his son.

Rene Russo plays Anna Herk, the house wife of an executive that is embezzeling money from his employer, which earns him the sights of assassins (Dennis Farina among them). Her daughter is targeted by Allen’s watergun toting sun in a school game of ‘assassin’ in which everyone draws names and attempts to ‘terminate’ their victim. Everyone seems to show up at Herk’s house at once and things get confusing.

Before you know it, two dimwits have stolen an atomic bomb, that resembles a garbage disposal, from some Russian arms dealers, and they get tangled up in the plot. Janene Garofalo and Patrick Warburton play unlikely partners with the Miami police department that tag along for the adventure. Throw in some goats, don’t ask–just watch, and a call in show that taunts Florida Gator fans after the football team lost, and this makes for an unlikely funny comedy. Barry Sonenfeld, director, did a great job. I highly recommend it.

It was sheer bad luck that “Big Trouble” was supposed to be released right around the time of the September 11 attacks. And even afterwards, parts of it (about bombs on planes and airport security) just didn’t seem that funny anymore. Even so, it’s a hilarious slapstick ride (well duh, it’s based on a Dave Barry book)

Eliot Arnold (Tim Allen) has a job he hates, a car his son Matt (Ben Foster) hates, and a loud obnoxious client that everyone hates. A bomb in a footlocker arrives in Miami, in a lowlife bar run by Russian arms dealers. (No I am not making this up) Meanwhile, a pair of assassins called Henry (Dennis Farina) and Leo (Jack Kehler) arrive in Miami to shoot a crooked embezzling foot-fetishist businessman called Arthur Herk (Stanley Tucci). Their assassination plot goes awry when Matt leaps out at Arthur’s stepdaughter Jenny (Zooey Deschanel) with a squirt gun, and is promptly tackled by Jenny and her mom Anna (Rene Russo, in a peroxide-blonde wig).

Eliot and Anna immediately are attracted to one another. As Eliot tries to figure out his relationship with Matt, Arthur buys the bomb, but soon the two assassins, two street thugs trying to become kingpins, two deadpan FBI agents, an immigrant maid, a spacey homeless guy and two irritable cops are in the middle of a wild chase over a nuclear bomb. And Miami has about forty-five minutes left…

Confused? Oh yeah. This movie is far from simple, in a slapstick sort of way. The humor is unashamedly stupid, making fun of teens, dogs, hallucinogenic toads, goats, people who smoke a lot in restaurants, newspaper bosses, dumb street thugs, Miami in general, and airline security. (Somehow this last one isn’t as funny as it used to be) They even get in a nod to the original author Dave Barry. Most of the violence and romance isn’t serious either (like the frantic makeout scene where Anna and Eliot gyrate around his office, spilling hot coffee and breaking knicknacks). The one exception is the adorable romance between sweet-natured bum Puggy (Jason Lee, who looks like Jesus impersonator) and maid Nina (Sofía Vergara), who are so sweet and shy that it brings a tear to your eye.

Tim Allen is hilarious as the ad-agent-turned-national-hero, especially the scene where he chases the airplane down the runway. Rene Russo is also great, balancing out the funniness with serious acting; Ben Foster is great as Matt; Farina and Kehler are a pair of endearingly straightforward hit men who are enjoying the whole fiasco; Janeane Garofalo and Patrick Warburton are great as well, as the cop who focuses on crime and protecting the public, and the other cop who merely wants to sleep with any halfway attractive female. Stanley Tucci is outrageously hateable as Arthur.

There’s a lot of sex-related humor (nothing too hideous), plenty of swearing, and the makeout scene. There’s also violence, but none of it is gory and some is just absurd (like when Eliot runs the car into the goat). The best scenes are probably when the enormous toad spritzes Arthur in the face. What happens? Watch for yourself! I’m not going to tell you!

And… “She know my name! She knows everything! SHE’S COMING TO TAKE MY SOUL!”

Russell Crowe is excellent as an overweight ,slightly shabby journalist ,who is flawed personally, but an excellent journalist.

Helen Mirren is good as his stressed boss.Ben Afflek is surprisingly good as his old friend and US congressman. Rachel

McAdams is fine as the new face of the news,a blogger for the newspaper. There is suspense, that grabs you and holds you til the end. I saw it with friends and discussed it through and after dinner. Always a sign of a good movie. How in the world does Crowe manage to be so appealing in messy clothes and overweight? I highly recommend this movie.

Cleerance Clearwater Revival

No Way, ‘State of Play, the BBC miniseries was the best series I have seen since ‘Wired’. No Way, was the American version going to be as good. I was right, it is not as good, but Almost!

Russell Crowe as Cal McCaffrey, the old time journalist who works for truth and justice, brings that justice to this film, like no one else could. He makes this film what it is. Rachel McAdams, as the Capitol Hill blogger, is fine in her role, but it could have been anyone. Helen Mirren, as the editor of this fine paper, is ruthless and mean and fine, as is her wont. But, it was Russell Crowe who made this film fascinating. The dirty long hair flowing as he walked and ran down corridors. The paunch from eating all those fast food meals and drinking the Irish wine, Scotch. Yep, this was the real deal, the newsmen of yesteryear.

The aide to Congressman, Stephen Collins, played by Ben Affleck, dies suddenly, an accident or suicide or was it murder? Cal and his newspaper blogger, Dela, start snooping and find that one and one don’t make two, it adds up to five. Four murders and an investigation into a security group that hopes to control the world. As time moves on and clues begin to come together and stories unravel, we have a fast paced mystery, here. It is full of suspense and intrigue and just when we think we know who done it, the circle moves. That Russell Crowe, he could be one of the best actors around, you know that?

While it’s taken a very long time to get to this point, the series has finally managed to engage me in a way that it had yet to do. The characters are now dealing with real conflicts between other characters and their own personal agendas and the story leaves off on an interesting cliff hanger. With new goals put into place and the characters left in limbo, the next volume becomes required viewing for anyone who has made this far into the series.

This is a great workout that can grow with you as your strength and stamina develop. This workout is probably too intense for the true beginner, but would provide an excellent workout for the advanced beginner to intermediate exerciser. There are 3 separate workouts (called Levels) that progress in difficulty. Level 1 lasts 20 minutes and consists of an interval workout that mixes cardio with strength moves that work the upper and lower body simultaneously. Level 2 is 15 minutes and has more challenging moves such as squat thrusts, jumping pushups, tricep dips with a leg lifts and one-arm pushups. This section has some high impact moves, so be prepared to jump. Fortunately, Heba and Vicky show low impact versions, so you don’t ever have to jump if you don’t want to. Finally, Level 3 is 10 minutes and focuses on strength moves to really exhaust the muscles and add definition. A warm-up and cool-down are included. The stretching section is excellent. Bob doesn’t really do the moves, but he coaches and helps the contestants maintain proper form.

Buy,Download, Or Stream The Biggest Loser: The Workout – Boot Camp! Click Here

You can customize your workout by selecting which levels you want to do and the order you want to do them at the beginning of you workout. You can do each level once, more than once or not at all. Or you can choose the Maximum Results program which has preset selections based on how many weeks you’ve been doing the program.

Equipment Needed: Hand Weights, Resistance Band, Medicine Ball (however the band and ball are optional and the moves are also shown without them)

Buy,Download, Or Stream The Biggest Loser: The Workout – Boot Camp! Click Here

Things That Could Be Improved: My only complaint is that sometimes the contestants performing the workout don’t always demonstrate the best form, and will sometimes randomly do their own thing. Your best bet is to follow Allie if you want to do the move correctly. Heba shows modifications to make the workout easier if you are just starting out. The moves are simple and easy to follow, so you can do this workout even if you aren’t super coordinated.

Overall: This is a great workout that will really improve your fitness level and help to build strength and agility. It uses proven techniques such as interval training and plyometrics, and Bob is a motivating instructor. This is how they really workout on the ranch. Enjoy and hope you get great results!

I not only own the other Biggest Loser dvds, but do my daily workout from a selection of about 100 dvds. Still, this was a “must have” to add to my collection…as that was my first thought after doing it.

I’ve always found Bob to be one of the best motivators. He doesn’t just do a move that you follow and move on, he shows you as a coach how to do it correctly so that you gain maximum benefit from it.

This dvd is both cardio and sculpting and this creates maximum fat burning…you’ll burn lots of calories during the cardio portions, then the sculpting will help you increase muscle mass which, thereby, increases your metabolism and burns even more calories even while you are at rest.

Even if you own the other Biggest Loser workouts, this one adds new moves, new people, more variety and great results.

I typically rotate all my workouts so that I have constant variety from my collection but I found myself continually going back to this dvd time and again and back to back.

Therefor, it needed to recieve some accolades via Amazon…Bob succeeded once again with a “must have” workout that all can do!

And, on that note, it should be noted whether you workout daily like myself or you are just beginning, he has moves for either class of fitness persona. You can follow along with the easy program, or go full steam once you improve…either way, the moves are easy to follow and produce rapid results.

This is Paramount’s first chance to release MY FAIR LADY on DVD; following a lapse in the distribution/copyright formerly controlled by Warner Brothers. No doubt they’ll later include it in an Audrey Hepburn box-set with their other Hepburn titles (”Roman Holiday”, “Funny Face” and “Sabrina” among them).

MY FAIR LADY is a true cinema classic; one of the last major Hollywood musicals and the film which finally netted director George Cukor a belated Academy Award for ‘Best Director’. Based on the long-running Broadway musical and G.B. Shaw’s “Pygmalion”, the story follows the grooming of Cockney flower-seller Eliza Doolittle (Audrey Hepburn) into a lady of refinement by linguistics professor Henry Higgins (Rex Harrison). These two opposites could hardly be more different, until the day that Higgins admits he’s “grown accustomed to her face”…

With a star-studded supporting cast (Wilfred Hyde-White, Jeremy Brett, Gladys Cooper and Stanley Holloway chief among them) and the soaring score of Alan Jay Lerner and Frederick Loewe, MY FAIR LADY is the glittering jewel which capped off the era of the great Hollywood musicals. Seldom again would audiences be treated to such a sumptuous spectacle on the screen.

Buy,Download, Or Stream My Fair Lady! Click Here

Despite a huge critical backlash (concerning Julie Andrews not cementing her most acclaimed stage role on film), Audrey Hepburn gives a spirited performance as feisty Eliza. She worked hard to get her limited singing voice into the necessary shape to meet the demands of the score, yet at the 11th hour was replaced by noted Hollywood “ghost singer” Marni Nixon. Rex Harrison, having starred in both the Broadway and London productions of the show, was confident enough in his performance to sing his songs live (via a hidden microphone). Stanley Holloway–another veteran of the stage show–also triumphantly reprises his role for the screen.

Warner’s previous double-disc Special Edition release (using the 1997 restored print of the film) was quite definitive. I can’t imagine how Paramount is going to top that release–unless they perform a new remaster of the 1997 print. Still, MY FAIR LADY is one of those movies which deserves to always be in circulation, constantly enjoyed and discovered by new audiences. I can only hope a shiny new Blu-ray release is just around the corner…

EXTRA FEATURES:

* Audio commentary with restoration experts Robert Harris and James Katz, art director Gene Allen, and singer Marni Nixon

* Vintage featurettes, footage and audio

* Alternate Audrey Hepburn vocals

* poster and lobby card galleries (with Rex Harrison radio interview)

* “Comments On A Lady”

Professor Henry Higgins (Rex Harrison) who specializes in the English language makes a bet with Colonel Hugh Pickering (Wilfrid Hyde-White) that he can take someone who speaks with a lower-class language and by correcting the speech can pass off as upper-class or royalty. Overhearing this bet is a flower girl Eliza Doolittle (Audrey Hepburn); she wants to work a flower stand. But they will not take her unless she can speak more “genteel”. Professor Higgins takes up the challenge.

Will he succeed?

What does her father (Stanley Holloway) thing finding that she moved in whit the two professors and did not want any clothes?

This is a musical version of the movie Pygmalion (1938), based on a play by George Bernard Shaw.

As people find that music and movies bring memories of the time in which they heard or viewed it. His movie has a meaning to me as I too was in love and found myself singing “On the street where you live.” One of the strengths of the movie is that many of the songs instead of being classical and just stuffed into at odd times actually are songs that you would initiate in your life and they did so in the lives of the characters in the movie.

This is one of the few films that were just waiting for Blu-ray to be perfected.

Reviewing the movie: I’m not a Jim Carrey fan, i’m really far from them (i think his acting in other movies is… well, dumb), besides, this movie is one of my favorites, and nobody could portray a better Mask character than Carrey.

This movie is not only a feast of special effects (by the ILM guys, inspired in the cartoon antics of Tex Avery), musical numbers, and laughs; this movie also has a message in it — “From Zero to Hero”.

Yeah! i know that this is part of the main title of the DVD (in theatres, it hasn’t this title), somebody could think that Zero is refering to Stanley Ipkiss, and Hero is the Mask, but this title is NOT refering to the Stanley Ipkiss’ Mask character, it’s refering to Stanley Ipkiss himself! The Mask character is far from being a Hero, it’s really a headache to Ipkiss and the society in general, but when Ipkiss realizes that he doesn’t need the mask and began to confront his inner fears (and “the bad guys”) without the mask help, that’s when Ipkiss become a Hero… in the real life, somehow that’s something that we can achieve when we stop “wearing our masks” and begin to act like ourselves, showing to the other who really are we.

Reviewing the DVD: The audio and video quality are good (the sound is Dolby Surround 5.1 and the video is remastered); this is a double sided disc, in one side you get the Full Screen version of the film, in the other the Widescreen version (something common in “old” dvd’s), in the extras side, you can see 2 deleted scenes (but without commentary..), an audio commentary by Chuck Russell (here you can learn why those 2 scenes where eliminated… unfortunatelly the audio comentary doesn’t have any subtitles, so, if you’re not an English speaker, probably you’ll have a problem); audio in english and french, subtitles in spanish, french and english; the theatrical trailer…. the box says that the dvd has Production notes, but i can’t find none.

This is a good movie, and it doesn’t matter if you’re not a Carrey fan (like myself)

Did you know that this excellent comedy was planed to be a horror?! Based on popular comic, THE MASK would be a storu about green killer who tells sarcastic remarks, while he’s tearing a part his victims with an axe. But, when director Chuck Russell got Jim Carrey for this role he decided to do a comedy. And lucky for him and us he did a great job. I remember when I saw THE MASK for the first time. Fantastic story, interesting characters, and of course, Jim Carrey in role which made him famous. Story is about unsuccessful, shy banker who comes in possesion of an ancient wooden mask which turnes him into a wild, green, party creature who now has everything: powers, money and love. It influented on me so much that I find the same dog like Milo (that is one damn smart dog!). Carry gave the best of himself: he danced, sang and made jokes all the time. Cameron Diaz left me breathless, and two caps…, well, see it for yourself. This film guaranties fun whole 90 minutes it lasts and trust me, you will love it.
